Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance is a 501c3 nonprofit that accredits, inspects, and awards grants to approved aftercare organizations to retrain, rehome, and retire Thoroughbreds using industry-wide funding.
Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance has become the comprehensive solution for Thoroughbred aftercare in North America.
Infrastructure Building
Starting with 21 accredited organizations in 2012, Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance now has 86 accredited organizations in the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico that operate with the highest standards.
With the rigorous accreditation and inspection process, Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance accreditation seal is recognized as the gold standard in Thoroughbred aftercare.
These 86 organization operate 180 facilities and offer a variety of programs, including equine-assisted services, rehabilitation, retraining, adoption, and sanctuary programs.
The Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance accreditation process has made aftercare organizations stronger, more efficient, and has helped them raise more funds and grow responsibly, allowing them to help more horses exiting the racetrack.
Funding and Grants
Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance is supported by every aspect of the Thoroughbred industry. Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance’s accreditation process provides donors with confidence that their contributions are allocated in the most effective manner. Since 2012, more than $31.9 million has been awarded as grants to accredited organizations.
How are Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance funds allocated?
- 75% — Grants to accredited organizations, earmarked for equine care
- 10% — Accreditation process, including physical site inspections of every facility
- 10% — G&A operations
- 5% — Reserve fund
Pathways to New Careers
Thoroughbreds are versatile horses that thrive on having a career and a purpose.
Since Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance’s inception in 2012, more than 16,500 horses have found a new home or career through Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance accredited aftercare organizations. Some are profiled here.
Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance accredited organizations have transitioned former racehorses into five-star eventers, champions in the show ring, mounts for equine-assisted therapy programs, living tourism destinations, teachers of equine welfare in educational programs, and more. Thorough the work of Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance accredited organizations, new opportunities are arising for off-track Thoroughbreds.
