Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance will be present at Churchill Downs during Kentucky Derby Week for a variety of exciting events leading up to the running of the 150th Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve which takes place on Saturday, May 4, 2024. Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance will be recognized with a named race on the undercard of Champions Day. Champions Day is a celebration of Thoroughbred racing history, and will be held during Kentucky Derby Week on Wednesday, May 1, 2024. Following the running of the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance race, a presentation will be made to the winning connections including a branded blanket and branded merchandise. A representative from Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance will be present to host the winners of the “Off to the Races” VIP Experience online benefit auction. This exciting VIP experience was generously donated by Churchill Downs Incorporated and Second Stride. The winners will enjoy all-inclusive box seats, tickets to the Winner’s Party at the Kentucky Derby Museum and a tour of Second Stride, a Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance accredited organization.

Days End Farm Horse Rescue offers a two-hour program designed specifically for Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. DEFHR's Scout Day Program includes a tour of the farm, educational talk, hands-on horse grooming, hands-on horse leading, and a short riding demonstration. This program allows numerous troops to join us on one day to gain knowledge and develop a passion for horses. Participants will earn a Days End Farm Horse Rescue Badge.

Join us at Circle A for Paint and Ponies-- our horse ambassadors will serve appetizers and drinks as you paint your very own equine-inspired artwork, and meet and mingle with some of our horses! Ticket sales and the time for the event will be announced in the coming weeks.
Registration includes a 1-hour semi-private lesson with one of DEFHR's trainers; Pairings and instructor are to be decided based on experience and personal goal setting. All levels and abilities welcome! DEFHR horses are available for borrow (groundwork lesson only) OR trailer in your equine partner (groundwork and/or riding lesson). Lesson time slots will be determined after registration via email. Come for just your time slot, or come for the whole day and audit with your fellow clinic participants! About our Trainers: Sara Strauss has been DEFHR's Head Trainer for over 15 years, bringing a wealth of knowledge and experience in everything horses. She is known for her quiet communication and has worked in a variety of disciplines, from dressage to western riding. Sara is passionate about educating the adult horse person on ways to better communicate with horses, whether it is on the ground or under saddle. Her focus is on biomechanics and body position, both in and out of the saddle. Wherever you are on your horsemanship journey, Sara is ready to meet you where you are at. Leigha Schrader's passion for DEFHR and the rescue horse shines through in everything she does. Leigha's training methods focus on finding balance in all areas of horsemanship. She incorporates positive reinforcement, clicker training, and liberty/trick training into her programs. Leigha is passionate about starting horses ethically from the ground up and showcasing how amazing rescue horses can be through her liberty performance work. Under saddle, Leigha has found success on the local and rated Hunter/Jumper circuits. She enjoys teaching compassionate horsemanship, both in and out of the saddle! Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance announced Monday that tickets are now available for the ninth annual America’s Best Racing (ABR) Pre-Preakness Party. In celebration of the 149th running of the Preakness Stakes, the ABR Pre-Preakness Party is set to be held on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, at the Mt. Washington Tavern in Baltimore, Maryland. Also, registration is now open for the silent auction associated with the event that benefits Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance. Proceeds from the ABR Pre-Preakness Party will benefit Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance and The Jockey Club Safety Net Foundation. The event will also strive to raise awareness for a new event partner, the Ed Brown Society, which celebrates the rich history of African-Americans in the equine industry and creates opportunities for young people of color to gain industry exposure. Sponsored by the Honorable Earle I. Mack and Lael Stables, the Pre-Preakness Party is one of the most anticipated events of Preakness week. “I am pleased to support an event that aims to holistically better our sport of horse racing, which gives us so much joy and pleasure,” said Mack. “Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance’s accreditation program is integral to ensure our horses are cared for after working hard for us on the racetrack. The Safety Net Foundation, in helping the humans who make up the sport, truly lives up to its name. America’s Best Racing serves to grow the sports fan base. About the event Calling all Equine Photography enthusiasts! Come learn from three experienced equine photographers (Lori Sortino, Deb Hofstetter, and Cathy Wallace) who have worked together since 2019 photographing horses. Together we have produced thousands of horse images, including portraits, action, running, jumping, detail, artistic, technical, competition, and candids. We will teach you how to capture great horse images under various conditions, and how to work with the real world challenges of backgrounds, lighting, and horse behavior! Workshop Limited to 8 participants. Where will the Workshop Take Place? We will be photographing the horses (and burros if you wish!) at Redwings Horse Sanctuary, located at 6875 Union Rd.
